What is a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)?
A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a digital record that an employer licensed by the UK Home Office must issue before you can apply for a Skilled Worker Visa. Without it, you cannot get the visa, and without the visa you cannot legally work in the UK (unless you have another right to work, such as settled status or a graduate visa).
Not every employer in the UK holds a sponsor licence. To issue a CoS, the employer must appear on the Register of Licensed Sponsors, which is maintained and published by the UK Home Office. As of 2024, around 60,000 organisations are on this register, which is a small fraction of all UK employers.
