What is a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)?

A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a digital record that an employer licensed by the UK Home Office must issue before you can apply for a Skilled Worker Visa. Without it, you cannot get the visa, and without the visa you cannot legally work in the UK (unless you have another right to work, such as settled status or a graduate visa).

Not every employer in the UK holds a sponsor licence. To issue a CoS, the employer must appear on the Register of Licensed Sponsors, which is maintained and published by the UK Home Office. As of 2024, around 60,000 organisations are on this register, which is a small fraction of all UK employers.

This means that for immigrants and international workers, a huge number of job postings are effectively off-limits, even if you're perfectly qualified. Hiredge automates the filtering process so you only see opportunities that are genuinely accessible to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which visa route does this apply to?

The Hiredge sponsorship filter is primarily designed for the Skilled Worker Visa route, which requires a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. We cross-reference employers in the 'Worker' category on the Home Office register.

How often is the Home Office register updated?

The Home Office publishes updates to the register periodically. Hiredge syncs the register every Monday at 06:00 UTC, so your alerts are based on the most recent available data.

Can I still miss sponsored jobs?

Occasionally yes. The employer name in a job listing may not exactly match the Home Office register (for example, a subsidiary using a different trading name). We use fuzzy matching to catch most variations, but we recommend always verifying directly with the employer.

Is the sponsorship filter free?

Basic sponsorship filtering on job alerts is available to free users. Pro users get instant alerts, multiple sponsorship alert subscriptions, and priority processing.

What industries have the most sponsored jobs in the UK?

Healthcare (NHS and private hospitals), IT and technology, engineering, finance, education, and hospitality are among the sectors with the most licensed sponsors. Our filter works across all industries.

Important:Sponsorship eligibility is based on the Home Office register at time of sending. Always confirm an employer's current sponsorship status before applying. Hiredge is not responsible for changes to employer licensing status between sync cycles.
